How Do I Become a Volunteer?
Volunteers usually begin their journey by first becoming a service user at one of our Community Hubs.
This gives you the opportunity to trial our services and to see if volunteering with The Health and Wellness Hub is the right fit for you. Our criteria to become a volunteer says that the person must be unemployed and have one or more of the following: physical disability, learning disability, mental health issue, an unpaid carer, lone parent, affected by addiction or ex offender. If you have been identified as a potential volunteer, you are required to have a Disclosure Scotland check completed. You must also provide us with 2 references from people who know you well but are not related to you or live within your household. We will monitor your progression throughout to ensure a positive destination is achieved at the end of your volunteering experience.
Will my benefits be affected when I am volunteering?
You can still volunteer when you are in receipt of benefits but if you are receiving ESA, you must inform Jobcentre Plus if you are thinking about volunteering. You can get a copy of their ‘Volunteering while getting benefits’ leaflet from your local Job Centre Plus office. They will also be able to give you advice.
Are my travelling expenses paid?
The Health and Wellness Hub greatly values the work carried out by volunteers and will reimburse your travel expenses. At your induction, your Volunteer Coordinator will issue you with an expenses form and advise you on the most cost-effective transport available. Complete your expenses form each time that you travel to your volunteering position and hand it to your Volunteer Coordinator at the end of the month so your claim can be processed. Ensure you keep a hold of your bus/train ticket as we will need these to be able to process your expenses and if you are a driver we require the amount of milage between your home and where you will be volunteering that day. Please see Expenses Policy for more details.
What if I can’t make it to The Hub?
If you are ill or have an appointment, please contact your Volunteer Coordinator as soon as possible to let them know.
This will enable them to plan ahead and ensure The Hub will run smoothly.
